Olympic champion Anna Kiesenhofer, remembered for her stunning and historic victory in the road race at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, delivered a modest performance in the women’s individual time trial at the 2025 UCI Road World Championships held in Kigali, Rwanda. The Austrian rider finished in 17th place, well outside the battle for the podium, in a race defined by the demanding profile of the course and the challenging altitude of Rwanda’s capital city, situated more than 1,800 meters above sea level.
Kiesenhofer, known not only for her cycling but also for her academic career in mathematics, once again attracted media attention due to her unique approach to the sport. Unlike many of her rivals, she competes without a professional team structure, often relying on self-preparation and tactical intelligence to maximize her performance. Her presence in Kigali underscored the dedication and perseverance that continue to make her a respected figure in international cycling, even when she is not competing for medals.

The women’s time trial was ultimately dominated by Switzerland’s Marlen Reusser, who confirmed her position as one of the world’s top specialists by winning with a time of 43:09.34 over the 31.2-kilometer course. She was followed on the podium by Dutch riders Anna van der Breggen and Demi Vollering, both of whom consolidated the Netherlands’ reputation as a powerhouse in women’s cycling.
Reusser’s victory marked another milestone in her remarkable career and added to Switzerland’s growing presence in world cycling. For Anna Kiesenhofer, finishing 17th did not diminish the significance of her participation. Her result was seen more as part of her ongoing journey in elite cycling rather than as a disappointment. Fans and commentators alike highlighted the fact that her continued presence at the highest level is proof of her enduring passion for the sport, and a reminder of how unpredictability and determination can still define the narrative of modern cycling.
