Augusta National and The R&A have announced sweeping updates to their qualification systems ahead of the 2026 majors, aiming to strengthen global representation by granting automatic entries to winners of six distinguished national Opens: Scottish, Spanish, Japan, Hong Kong, Australian and South African.
This change marks a strategic shift to reward international excellence and enhance inclusivity in golf’s most revered tournaments. In addition, the Masters has tightened its PGA Tour exemption criteria—only winners of full-point events that count toward the FedEx Cup and the Tour Championship will now receive invites, discontinuing direct entry for fall event winners.
Meanwhile, The Open is expanding its Open Qualifying Series to include 15 events across 13 countries, enabling broader global access, with specific tournament details set to be announced in September.
Both Fred Ridley, Chairman of Augusta National, and Mark Darbon, CEO of The R&A, emphasized the unity of their vision: to elevate golf’s international footprint and reward elite performance in historic national championships worldwide.
The moves are being hailed as a milestone in elite-level golf—reshaping the path to the sport’s biggest stages and offering unprecedented opportunities for champions from diverse regions to compete at the highest level.
