The Los Angeles Lakers were left with no options to qualify for the NBA playoffs

The Los Angeles Lakers were left on Tuesday night with no options to qualify for the NBA playoffs and certified the failure of a team that started as a favorite for the title at the hands of LeBron James and Anthony Davis. 'King' James, injured in Tuesday's final loss to the Suns, is out of the playoffs for the fourth time in his almost two-decade career, and his quest for a fifth ring is in question at 37 years old.

From the questionable signing of Russell Westbrook and the configuration of the squad, through injuries and the direction of coach Frank Vogel, these are some keys to one of the biggest debacles the NBA has seen in a long time. A failed makeover In just two years, the Lakers have gone from proclaiming themselves champions in the 'bubble' of Disney World, offering the title to the memory of the late Kobe Bryant, to finishing this season probably in eleventh place in the Western Conference.

In between was another lackluster campaign in which they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Suns. After that disappointment, the general manager, Rob Pelinka, decided to look for a third star to cover the foreseeable injuries of the veteran James and the fragile Davis.

With the approval of both, Pelinka decided to complete the 'Big 3' with veteran Russell Westbrook, for which he gave the Wizards a package with three established players (Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Montrezl Harrell) and a choice of first round of Draft. Westbrook's pharaonic contract ($44.2 million this year), along with those of James and Davis, practically reaches the salary limit, so Pelinka filled out the roster with too inexperienced youngsters (Malik Monk, Talen Horton-Tucker, Austin Reaves) and veterans with minimal contracts (Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Trevor Ariza). Westbrook's lack of adaptation As nearly all analysts anticipated, Westbrook's style of play didn't mesh with what the Lakers needed from their third sword. In a team that revolves around 'King James', Westbrook's lack of outside shooting and inability to play without the ball made him difficult to complement in attack. Historical king of triple doubles in the NBA, Westbrook was always an omnipresent and exuberant player on the court but at 33 years old he no longer has the physical superiority of yesteryear and on defense he still has significant gaps.
