The Ukrainian Yaroslava Mahuchikh was proclaimed world champion in the high jump room, this Saturday in the morning of the World Championship in the specialty that takes place in Belgrade. Mahuchikh is part of the group of six Ukrainian athletes present in Belgrade despite the invasion of her country by Russia, excluded from the event for this reason as well as Belarus for its support for Moscow's aggression.

The young athlete, 20 years old, who had to leave her country in very difficult conditions and travel for three days to reach Belgrade, thus wins her first major international title, although she had already stood on the podium at the Tokyo-2020 Games (3rd ) and in the Doha-2019 Outdoor World Cup (2nd). With a jump of 2.02 m, she surpassed the Australian Eleanor Patterson (2.00 m) and the Kazakh Nadezhda Dubovitskaya (1.98 m), who completed the podium.

As soon as she became champion, Mahuchikh surrounded herself with a flag of her country to the applause of the Serbian public, without any incident being recorded, despite the strong ties between Serbia and Russia historically. Before competing in Belgrade, the athlete recounted "the nightmare" that she lives since Russia began the invasion of her country.

"It took me three days to get here, a very stressful journey. Hundreds of phone calls, numerous changes of address, explosions, fires and bombing sirens. I would like to think that it is just a nightmare, but it is the reality of my country," explained on the website of the European Athletics Federation. We left our city of Dnipro three weeks ago when the conflict started to settle in a small town not far from home. No one could train because we were forced to spend our days in a basement, following the minute-by-minute news of what was happening in kyiv, Sumy and Kharkiv," she added.
